1. Editors of newspapers and magazines often go to extremes to provide their readers with unimportant facts and statistics.

1) extreme n.极端 adj.极端的

extremely adv.极端地

go to extremes (to do sth.)

2) provide sb. with sth. = provide sth. for sb. 向某人提供某物

例:

We are here to provide the best possible medical care for the public.=

3) statistic n.一项统计数字

statistics n.[pl] 统计数字

These statistics are misleading.

An important statistic is that 94% of crime relates to property.

2. Last year, a journalist had been instructed by a well-know magazine to write an article on the president’s palace in a new African public.

1) instruct v.指示,命令;教授,传授

当instruct 表示“指导,传授” 时与teach 意义一样(但更为正式), 但用法不一样。

常见词组:

instruct sb. in (doing) sth.

教授某人(做)某事(通常指教授某种技能)

对比: teach sb. sth. = teach sth. to sb.

teach sb. to do sth.

She instructed us in Chemistry. =

She teaches us Chemistry. =

Experiments have proved that children can be instructed in swimming at a very early age.

注意:

当instruct 表示其它意思时所跟从句使用正常时态.

例:

After having been instructed to drive out of town, I began to acquire confidence.

I've instructed them to keep the door locked.

He instructed that a wall (should) be built around the city.

The letter instructed him to report to headquarters immediately.

We have been instructed that a decision will not be made before the end of the week.

You will be instructed where to go as soon as the plane is ready.

词形变换:

instruction [c] n.指示,命令 [u] n. 教导,传授

instructions n.用法说明

例:

Follow the instructions on the packet carefully.

Always read the instructions carefully before you start.

I'm under instructions to keep my speech short.

3. Hundreds of steps lead to the high wall which surrounds the president’s palace.

例:

Which door leads to the yard?

Eating too much can lead to health problems.

4. The journalist immediately set out to obtain these important facts.

1) set out to do sth.

(带着某种目的) 开始做某事

例:

She set out to break the world record

联想:

set out (for+地点) 或 set off (for+ 地点)

出发 (前往某处)

set… up. 创立……; 建立… …

例:

They set out/ off for home two weeks ago.

He will set out at eight o'clock, so we'll have plenty of time.

She set out to break the world record.

She set up a new world record for the 100 meters.

A new government (政府) was set up after the war.

We set out to paint the whole house but finished only the front part that day.

(2) obtain v.(尤指经过努力)获得 例:

I finally managed to obtain a copy of the report.

5. Meanwhile, the editor was getting impatient, for the magazine would soon go to press.

1) press n. 出版,印刷; 报章

go to press = start to be published

交付印刷

例:

Prices are correct at the time of going to press, but may be changed.

The story was reported in the press and on television.

6. He sent yet another fax informing the journalist that if he did not reply soon he would be fired.

1) yet another = another

其中yet 是强调数量增加

例:

Prices were cut yet again.

He made yet another mistake.

7. Not only had the poor man been arrested, but he had been sent to prison as well.

1) not only 位于句首时,与not only 有关的部分要部分倒装.

例:

Not only was his mother unhappy, but his father, too.

8. However, he had at last been allowed to send a fax in which he informed the editor that he had been arrested while counting the 1084 steps leading to the fifteen-foot wall which surrounded the president’s palace.

1) inform v. 通知,告诉

information [u]n.信息.
